UX Design

Over the past few months, I have been slowly falling in love with UX design. Below are several projects that use UX design principles to fix various problems.

For my capstone class, I put together a working prototype (it’s a little rough, but hey, it’s my first try at UX and UI design) of turning my hometowns website into a usable mobile app.

The second project is an article depicting seven weeks of learning about UX design. Starting with a crash course in the design thinking process, each week I looked at a different step in the method. From empathy to ideation, I mostly focused on the Barnes and Noble website and how it could be improved.

Last, I turned toward the CNN website to see how I could improve that interface as well. I looked at competitors, created personas, and drafted various testing methods. In the end, I completed a few rounds of a usability test with the help from loved ones. Overall, I came up with a few solutions to help improve the usability of the CNN website.

First App Prototype

First Prototype Process (Blog Post)

Over the course of the 8 weeks, I put together my new UX and UI design skills to the test with my biggest challenge to date. I took my hometown’s website and create a low-fidelity app prototype. I started off with doing research into the current site, created information architecture, personas/ user scenarios, flowcharts, paper prototypes, and then used Sketch and InVision to bring it to life.

Below is the link to the final blog post article with walk-though video at the end.

Seven Weeks of UX Design

Seven Weeks of UX

Spending seven weeks learning about UX design was a lot of fun, and I wish it was longer. For the most part, I looked at the Barnes and Noble website (which needs a desperate amount of work), and created some problem statements, looked at user empathy, and generated some ideas on how to fix several problems on the site.

Attached to each week’s summary is a PDF file with more findings and more details on the methods I used.

CNN Website Redesign

CNN Report

Whenever I get a notification from CNN, I can never find the article on the website. After weeks of frustration and running into other problems, I concluded that the website could use a little redesign. Using the design thinking process and UX design methods, I put together a mock-up of a survey, diary study, and interview that I would conduct as if I was on the CNN UX design team.

With that goal in mind, I did some research into the competition, created some personas, and started generating some ideas on how to improve the site.
